Bharti Airtel rolled out its voice over Wi-Fi services in more 5 states after launching it in Delhi-NCR in December. The expanded areas include Mumbai, Kolkata, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
The service allows Airtel users to make calls using Wi-Fi without charging any extra cost. The service currently can be accessed on compatible headsets namely, iPhone 6s series and above, Redmi K20, K20 Pro, POCO F1, Samsung J6, A10s, On6, M30s, and all OnePlus 7 models.
Accessing the service does not require any app and can be configured on the smartphone by simply checking smartphone compatibility on airtel.in/wifi-calling, upgrading device software to support WiFi calling, and switching on WiFi calling on the device with VoLTE enabled for a seamless experience, the company said in a statement.
"Airtel Wi-Fi Calling is designed to enhance voice calling experience for Airtel smartphone customers, especially when they are indoors. With the service, customers with Wi-Fi at home or office will get excellent signal quality indoors,"
Randeep Sekhon, Chief Technology Officer, Bharti Airtel said, “As a customer-obsessed brand, we are constantly working on improving customer experience based on their feedback. Seamless indoor coverage has been a key ask from mobile customers but getting permissions for site installations has always been a big challenge for mobile operators, particularly in top metros. ‘Airtel WiFi Calling’ is another pioneering technology intervention from Airtel and will go a long way in making the voice calling experience more seamless”
The company believes that this will boost the signal strength in indoor conditions having Wi-Fi with superior audio quality by automatically switching from LTE to VoWi-Fi. The company also added that the data consumption for using the service will be minimal.
In addition, the service is compatible with Airtel Xstream Fiber home broadband and soon will be compatible with all broadband services and WiFi hotspots, the company said.
